Sew By Design: giving an established local brand a much better digital fit
Sew By Design is a Pudsey-based dressmaking and alterations business that has been serving local customers for more than a decade.
Its original website had done its job well, but after more than ten years it was showing its age both visually and technically. The site was running on a very old Bedrock setup, the underlying theme had become dated and the editing experience no longer matched what the client needed day to day.
Rather than throw away everything people already recognised, I kept the established visual cues, including the familiar blue, and rebuilt the website around a fresher design, stronger content and much cleaner technical foundations.
The result is a site that still feels unmistakably Sew By Design, just without the digital creaking noises.
Refreshing the website without losing what already worked.
The original site had been around for more than ten years, so there was plenty worth keeping, but also plenty that needed attention.
Visually, some areas lacked contrast and readability, while the overall design no longer reflected the quality or personality of the business. The content also needed a rethink so the site did a better job of explaining the different services and giving visitors a clearer reason to get in touch.
Underneath, the website was running on an outdated setup with an ageing theme and unnecessary plugins. That made ongoing maintenance harder and limited how confidently the site could move forward.
The challenge was to modernise both the appearance and the foundations without stripping away the identity customers already knew.
The existing blue remained an important part of the Sew By Design identity, so the redesign built around it rather than replacing it.
Typography, spacing, layout and contrast were all reworked to give the site a more polished and fashion-led feel while keeping it approachable and local.
Particular attention was paid to readability. Areas that previously suffered from weak contrast were simplified and strengthened, making the site easier to scan and use across desktop and mobile.
The end result feels fresher and more considered without becoming unrecognisable.
A large part of the existing content was rewritten and restructured so the site did a better job of selling the actual services.
The focus was on making bespoke dressmaking, alterations and repairs easier to understand, with clearer headings and more useful supporting information.
The pricing page was also improved so customers can get a better idea of costs before making contact, while still allowing Helen to keep those details updated herself.
The enquiry journey stayed deliberately simple. There was no need to reinvent something that already worked, so the existing contact approach remained straightforward and practical.
The redesign was also a technical overhaul.
The old theme was rebuilt, the PHP environment was brought up to date and unnecessary plugins were removed. That created a leaner, more maintainable WordPress setup with better performance and fewer moving parts.
The site uses Advanced Custom Fields to give Helen full control over the content without exposing her to unnecessary complexity.
That means regular updates, including pricing changes, can be handled directly by the client without needing a developer every time something small changes.
The new Sew By Design website keeps the parts of the brand customers already knew while giving the business a much stronger digital presence.
It is clearer, easier to read, easier to manage and built on a far healthier technical foundation than the decade-old site it replaced.
Helen now has full control over the content and can keep key information such as pricing up to date herself, while the underlying setup is simpler to maintain and better prepared for future changes.
The project was less about reinventing Sew By Design and more about giving an established local business the website it had grown into.
